Painting Basics and Beyond! Landscape Paintings

This week in my Painting Basics and Beyond class, we began to make our mixed media landscape collages. This project is great because it combines different painting techniques with a fantastic result.

This week, we started creating the background for our masterpiece by learning about washes, tints, and shades, along with the sgraffito painting technique.

First, we chatted a little bit about tints and shades. We talked about how a shade is like putting on black sunglasses 😎 and adding black to a color, and tints are when you add white to color. We then created a wash, using water to create our sky background. Adding water to your paint makes it more transparent and easier to spread and is great to use for large areas of your paintings.

We combined this to practice our tints and shades, mixing and washing for our skies. The students chose what color they wanted for their skies.

Art Teacher Hack alert!  Do you spy that magazine there? Old magazines make excellent (and cheap!) paint palettes!  The glossiness of the page also lends itself well to easily slide paint around and mix it up.  Best of all is when you’re done, just rip off the top page and throw away.  No water wasted and no time spent at the sink washing all those palettes!

We used shades ðŸ˜Ž on the top half of our painting, and tints on the bottom!

When we were done creating the sky background, we then moved on to creating the ground for our landscape and practicing the sgraffito technique. This technique is where you paint on your paper and then use tools, the end of your paintbrush, or a palette knife to scratch the paint. This is a fun way to play and make patterns, motion, and interest in your artwork!

Next week we are going to add clouds with scumbling, and use more mixed media to make these all come together!  Stay tuned!
