For our neighborhood Creative Club this week, we wrote stories about finding a geode, and then made our own using wet-felting!
First, my co-teacher Emily prompted the kids to write about finding a geode. Where did you find it? Did it give you magical powers? Who owns it? What does it look like? The kids took some time to write out their stories and share.
We then made our wet-felted geodes. To make these, you make a ball of roving, and continue to cover it in 8-10 layers of colors. Then, you add soap and water and agitate to get the fibers to felt together. When you go to cut them in half when you are finished, the results inside are magical!
I was trying to find a way to distribute the roving to a large group, and this set-up worked pretty well! I used these baskets from the Dollar Tree and dangled the tails out of the sides. This way, you could easily pull the tails off the roving and the colors stayed sorted and contained. I add the weights because it was really windy.
