Go Explore! Visiting the Chazen Museum of Art in Madison, Wisconsin

I recently took a little trip downtown Madison to the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus to visit the FREE Chazen Museum of Art.  This hidden gem has thousands of works of art from all over the world, including some from famous artists that I have shown my students in my art history classes.

Like this sketch by Pablo Picasso:

This statue and sketches by pop artist Claes Oldenburg (he also designed the iconic spoon and cherry statue in Minneapolis, Minnesota - hi neighbors!)

One of Andy Warhol’s screen prints of Marilyn Monroe:

And pop artist Roy Lichtenstein:

I took these “Arties”, you know, like a selfie but with art to show my students the artists we discussed, but of course there are so many other wonderful pieces of art there as well!

This large mixed media piece has always been one of my favorites:

If you’re not interested in visiting YET, you have to go to check out the special exhibit Suspended Landscapes.  Artist Amanda McCavour created thread drawings of plants, enlarged their size and hung them on huge gauze-like banners from the ceiling.  It was truly magical to experience this exhibit!  You can read more about it here: https://chazen.wisc.edu/exhibitions/suspended-landscapes-thread-drawings-by-amanda-mccavour/

Get out and explore, and visit the Chazen Museum of Art!  More information about the museum can be found on their website at: https://chazen.wisc.edu/
