I designed these Funny Face containers for my graduate ceramics class assignment after seeing the work of U.S. artist Lucky Stradley. Lucky makes these wonderfully odd faced containers for storing yarn and other art supplies. I thought the students would just love this idea, and would really come up with some creative ideas for this project.
Here as some examples of Lucky’s work, you can see more at her Etsy shop here.
Since this project allows for so much customization, I created a independent learning guide for students to build their funny face at their own pace. Also, I am thinking of turning this into a workshop with MSCR, and I always aim to send students home with information to continue their learning at home. Not only this student guide help them during the workshop, but it can be used at home to spring into new learning, and help show their grown-ups what they learned (you know, in case all the students say at the end was “it was fine 😂”).
For this project I used Crayola air-dry clay, and acrylic paint. I sealed it all with Mod Podge. I really enjoyed putting some of the acrylic painting techniques I have demonstrated in other MSCR classes to use on a 3-D form, and am wondering what else I could make to combine clay and painting techniques.
