Preschool Art & Story Time: Cozy with Yarn!

 With temperatures dropping and the cool fall mornings, I wanted to talk about being cozy!  One way we can keep warm and cozy is through a sweater, hats, or mittens, and these can be made with yarn!

We read the books Extra Yarn, The Mitten, and Joseph Had a Little Overcoat.

I found this cute little rhyme for balls of yarn that goes like this:

5 balls of yarn sitting a in a bowl, one fell out & started to roll.

It bounced on my foot and there it sits, how many balls are left to knit? (Then 4, 3, 2, 1)

After reading The Mitten, I passed out laminated animals and had a large white mitten, and as we sang the song I had the kids come up and put the animal in the mitten.

To the tune of Farmer in the Dell;

The Mitten in the snow, the mitten in the snow,

Help us please so we won’t freeze, a mitten in the snow.

A mole squeezes in, a mole squeezes in,

Help us please so we won’t freeze, a mole squeezes in.

(Repeat with, rabbit, hedgehog, owl, badger, fox, bear, mouse)

We then explored three centers, the first was weaving on snow fence with ribbon:

We then “knit” a sweater for a furry friend, and the students added their own faces:

For the third station, I put clear contact paper on the table, and the kids worked together to stick yarn pieces on it for a collaborative project:
