Beginning Machine Sewing Week One

In Begining Machine Sewing, with grades 3-8, we started by learning the parts of the sewing machine and what all of those buttons do. We then started driving practice to get used to the feel of the sewing machine by using just a needle with no thread on paper.  We practiced straight lines and turning a square corner in preparation for our first sewing project, a pillow case!

We then added thread and bobbin, learning how to thread both. It is a big job getting a machine ready to sew, but these students did great!

We then moved on to cutting out the pattern for our first project, a pillowcase.  Students learned how to use pins, how to use fabric wisely (don’t cut in the middle!), and how to cut fabric carefully.  These pillowcases take a large piece of fabric, and we even had to move out in the hallway for more space!

To get a our projects ready for sewing, we then pressed and pin the fabric for our next class when we will sew them together! Machine sewing a project has so many more parts than just sewing. Between threading the machine, creating bobin, cutting out fabric from a pattern, and ironing, these students did such a great job with all of the steps, I can’t wait to see how their projects turn out next week!
