This week in Preschool Art & Storytime, we talked about shapes! I introduced the basic shapes and we talked about their names and how many sides they have.
We then read these two books, the kids especially liked the Watch This! Book because it shows photos of kids making the shapes!
I then cut out shapes out of paper, laminated them and handed them out to the group. I had circles, rectangles, squares, triangles, and diamonds. I held up a shape, and we sang this little rhyme:
Do you know what shape this is,
Shape this is, shape this is,
Do you know what shape this is,
And do you have one too?
If you do then give it a shake, give it a shake, give it a shake
If you then give it a shake, and shout hooray for triangles!
In our centers, I created shape stamps from toilet paper tubes. The kids could choose from circles, squares, and triangles. This activity is great because the kids, ages 18 months to 3 years old can do this one all by themselves and with minimal mess (although they still find a way!).
I also brought along my giant peg board and with it another opportunity to make shapes!
Finally, I had my felt board with shapes that caregivers and kids could make pictures on!
